Humans acquire echinococcus through parasite eggs on unwashed hands, garden produce, or contact with animal fur. Dogs and cats are not a direct “source” but can carry eggs on paws and coat.
Six rules for the family
- Deworm your pet every 3–4 months per your veterinarian’s schedule.
- Wash hands after walks, play, and cleaning up after the animal.
- Do not feed raw meat or carrion; prevent scavenging of game.
- Wash garden vegetables and greens under running clean water; scald when needed.
- Keep separate outdoor shoes; do not walk indoors in muddy footwear.
- Do not let pets lick children’s faces; keep nails trimmed short.
If ultrasound already found a cyst
Do not delay a parasitology consultation. Visus Medical provides comprehensive diagnostics and, when indicated, non-surgical treatment of echinococcosis.
